University History & Legacy

1814 — Foundation

Kazan State Medical University was established on May 14, 1814, as the Faculty of Medicine within the Imperial Kazan University. It is the third oldest medical school in Russia, following Moscow and St. Petersburg.

1930 — Independent Status

The faculty was reorganized into an independent institution known as the Kazan Medical Institute. This shift allowed for the expansion of specialized faculties, including Prophylactic Medicine (1930) and Pediatrics (1932).

1994 — University Status

On April 29, 1994, the institute was officially upgraded to university status, becoming Kazan State Medical University. It received its modern educational license (No. 16 G – 235) earlier that same year on March 6.

1996 — English Medium MBBS Launch

The university introduced English-medium courses in 1996. This made it one of the early pioneers in Russia to offer medical education entirely in English for international students.

NMC (MCI) Recognition

KSMU has been recognized by the National Medical Commission (formerly Medical Council of India) for decades. While 2002 is often associated with the establishment of the university's "Center for Practical Skills", its recognition for Indian students is continuous and tied to its listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools.

Modern Infrastructure & Campus

The university has undergone extensive modernization, including the opening of advanced simulation centers and the "Standardized Patient" department. It currently utilizes 54 clinical bases and hospitals across the Republic of Tatarstan for practical training.
